Urban In Ibiza at Atzaro – review and more photos

August 13th, 2009

atzaro, ibizaOn one of the busiest nights I’ve ever seen at Atzaro, Urban In Ibiza descended on the country oasis last night for a beautifully paced showcase and magnificent party. I’d been trying to imagine how urban art would fit in with the Mediterranean landscape at all, let alone at a luxury hotel in the middle of nowhere. It worked brilliantly.

Urban legend and Banksy-collaborator Inkie, who hails originally from the famous Bristol School of Graffiti worked at sunset with Midlands artist Chu, to complete a masterwork together which was then to be auctioned off. The two are legends in the urban art world, having been on the scene since the early days of the graffiti art movement, and have worked together on several occasions.

Inkie and Chu finishing the piece for auction

Chu had been poolside with his aerosols since 2pm and was still putting the final touches to his side of the work at midnight. Joined by Inkie at sunset, the two merged their unique imagery as the sun dropped behind the palm trees and long pool in the Sant Llorenc countryside, and gave way to a warm spotlit evening.

At their side Amsterdam artist Shoe, who has also been on the urban art scene since the early 80s composed his calligraffiti, using layer upon layer of gold, black and red to spraypaint the lyrics of Roots Manuva which had been sent to him by email after a friendly correspondence with Roots.

Shoe at work

We sat watching them for hours, with a whole crowd of Shoe’s friends from Amsterdam, Holland and Ibiza.

Earlier on, whilst Chu had been at work on the pool terrace, Atzaro staff had offered two of their cars to Inkie and Shoe to go to work on and we witnessed a live spraying which instantly turned both cars into collectors’ items.

Stepping into the gallery space, I found a delighted Inkie, who had already sold all of the work he had on display. In fact many of the pieces exhibited inside by the Urban in Ibiza collective had already been sold to various collectors from the island, and elsewhere, including actor Stephen Dorff.

Shoe and Manuva’s Lyrics

Inkie and Chu (both first time visitors to the island) told us they had been tremendously inspired by being here; by the light, the colours and especially by the energy. Chu in particular, inspired to create an island city of sound systems in his live painting, seemed positively overwhelmed with his first impressions of Ibiza.

Later in the evening Dan Macmillan’s Zoltar label and Graffiti swimwear put on two delicious fashion shows on the upstairs catwalk, accompanied by a clever little breakdancer who couldn’t have been more than eight years old.

Roots Manuva then playfully took to the catwalk and performed to a very exuberant crowd of all ages, after a photo session down at the pool terrace with Shoe.

Ibiza gets grafitti’d with “Urban In Ibiza”

July 24th, 2009

urban in ibizaPrepare yourself for a visual feast this August as Grafitti sprays the sunny white isle with the anticipated arrival of URBAN IN IBIZA.

Never has Ibiza seen such a spectacular before with the world’s leading Grafitti artists displaying their work on the Island from 8th to 20th August culminating in a live art display by one of the UK’s most notorious graffiti writers INKIE.

Heralding from the infamous Bristol School of Graffiti, has been identified as Banky’s partner in crime. A dominant presence of over twenty years on the interational graffiti scene, Inkie’s trademark intricate imagery is uniquely striking with styles drawn from diverse inspiration, ubiquitous street signage, the architecture of ancient temples, Islamic geometry and currently resides as in-house artist at Jade Jagger’s West London Studios. Another urban art legend Chu will also be drawing live on the night too!

goldieFor Urban in Ibiza, Inkie has selected a cross-section of the UK’s leading street artists to show work of this kind in Ibiza for the first time including musical genius and Drum and Bass pioneer GOLDIE! Pioneer, cult status grafitti artist, drum n bass icon, DJ, producer and actor, Goldie is a total original and multi-talented complex shapeshifter. Goldie’s produced artistic works with 3D (Massive Attack) and provided pieces to Neneh Cherry, Noel Gallagher, Bjork, James Lavelle and Nellee Hooper to name a few.

MauMau, Chu, Dan MacMillan, China Mike, Mudwig, Pure Evil, Ryan Mcphail, Zeus, Mysterious Al, Eco, Fark FK, Finbarr, DAC, Nine-0, David Walker, Hush, Agent Provocateur, Grafter, Andy Council, and SHOK-1 will all show a selection of their work too from 8th – 13th August at the suitably glamourous Atzaro hotel in Ibiza, and then from the legendary Pacha Hotel from 13th – 20th August.

On 12th August, Atzaro plays host to a celebration of the exhibition in their beautiful gardens with Inkie creating one of his master-pieces live over the stunning flood-lit pool, reflecting such a special event on the Island. This one-off piece will then be auctioned-off during the night. Entertainment for the evening will be provided by credible, infamous urban musicians Roots Manuva, (Live Show) DJ MK (Kiss FM) DJ Samir and Benji Boko. Entrance is free and this exclusive first ever Urban event will run from 8pm – 2am.

Urban In Ibiza was the brainchild of Dizzi Saunders, who started promoting parties in the 80’s, and then went on to buy the Velvet Room in Soho which boasted the likes of Carl Cox and Fabio and Grooverider. Dizzi Saunders then moved to Ibiza where he started collecting Urban Art and really getting into the scene. After an idea to bring more cutting edge art and music to the White Isle, Dizzi hooked up with his old friend Inkie to let the people of Ibiza know what is going on in the Urban Entertainment scene and Urban In Ibiza was born.

Celebrated fashion designer Dan Macmillan will be showing some of his rare pieces from his Zoltar label, whilst sexy Ibizincan Swimwear label Graffiti will be treating us to a fashion show around the pool. This is a night and an art extravaganza not to be missed.
