The Libertines to headline Ibiza Rocks 10th Birthday 2015

February 17th, 2015

ibiza rockspete doherty - ibiza rocks barSo the long awaited news is finally here – We’ve been proud to have been championing Ibiza Rocks from their start at Bar M back in 2007. It was a complete first to have live bands out in the open air and was such a breath of fresh air and something completely new. We’ve seen how Ibiza Rocks have developed from the little Music Box room at Privilege to consistently putting on THE best live gigs here in Ibiza.

Opening the start of the 14 week series of gigs will be BRIT nominees Years & Years on 17th June, drum ‘n’ bass duo Sigma on the 24th June and one of our current faves Jungle & Shura on 1st July.

The biggy though is The Libertines returning to play the headline 10th Birthday show on the 22nd July. Then follows returning Clean Bandit on the 5th August and party expert Fatboy Slim on the 2nd September and closing the season will be festi stalwarts The Courteeners on the 16th September.

Andy McKay, Founder & CEO, Ibiza Rocks Group

The ultimate defining moment of Rocks was when we discovered that our future lay outdoors and that was the night Babyshambles played Bar M. It was the moment we found our time slot before midnight and the moment we discovered the energy created by a live band playing under the stars. It all clicked. It was that realisation that changing the soundtrack changed absolutely everything. By doing something that radical we skewed the whole direction of the future of Ibiza. To be celebrating 10 years on with a headline show from The Libertines, a truly iconic rock band reunited, is going to be one hell of a seminal moment for Ibiza Rocks. Roll on the next 10 years.

ibiza rocks - dirty pretty thingsCarl Barat, The Libertines

Ibiza Rocks is one of the greatest gigs there is. The strange and debauched energy of the place never fails to provide the perfect backdrop for bacchanalian reverie of the highest order. Everyone there is gonna be ‘mad for it’, I can’t wait. One of those nights actually worth the bastard hangover. Bring it.

Once again MTV will be documenting the series of gigs as their exclusive broadcast sponsor:

The network plans to broadcast a number of exclusive artist interviews, live performances and all the highlights from the 14-week long series from the Ibiza Rocks Hotel this summer hosted by Laura Whitmore.

White Island Music Festival, Dalt Vila, Ibiza Town, 07/09/13

September 12th, 2013

The second White Isle Music Festival took place in Ibiza on Saturday 7th September. This year it moved to the spectacular setting of Bastion St. Pere in Dalt Vila. With a line-up of up-and-coming bands from the UK and musicians living in Ibiza, it promised to be a great little festival, and it was. Only the forecasted rain threatened to spoil the proceedings, but in the end it didn’t!

We arrived just as the sun had set behind the hills in the distance leaving a pinky glow lighting up the sky from behind, providing a great vista from the site. The stage was in front of the huge walls of Dalt Vila – an amazing backdrop for the performances.

Opening the festival were Lost Podenco, which saw Ibizan resident Phil Dobie playing live for the first time with a backing band. Phil’s melodic tunes really came alive with a band and they soon had the growing crowd down the front of the stage to watch them. The heavens started to open during the last song, but they managed to get through to the end of it, with the help of someone sheltering Phil under an umbrella. Fortunately that was the worst of the weather for the night.

In between the bands DJ Spider played some tunes and kept us entertained. Next up onstage were Hot Ice, who funked it up a bit with their fusion of soul, jazz, spanish, rock and african music.

Plum aka Scottish singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Shona Maguire took it down a notch, accompanied by a bassist and a bank of electronic samples. She recently won “Best Electronic Act” at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards (2013). Her soaring vocals over the electro beats were very atmospheric, especially against the backdrop of the now floodlit Dalt Vila walls. She experienced a few technical problems throughout when some of the samples didn’t want to play, but it didn’t spoil what was a great and moving set.

Switching musical genres again to something much more rock ‘n’ roll, next were 4-piece band Burning Beaches, who announced that they were from London, England. Wielding their guitars across the stage, they upped the pace and got the crowd moving.

Whilst the stage was prepared for the next band we were treated to an unscheduled acoustic performance from local Rick Bargiel, in place of Pixie Ramsey who unfortunately couldn’t make it. Rick played a couple of blinding songs he had written the other day and got a great reception for them.

Last but by no means least were The Black Tambourines, a 4-piece band from Cornwall. Their bio said that they “lace grunge-ridden garage rock with surf pop sensibilities” and that’s exactly what they did. And apparently they’ve been tipped as “ones to watch” by The NME, so keep an eye out for them playing near you soon.

All in all, it was a really enjoyable festival, with a diverse range of live performers, who all played great sets in a fantastic setting. Roll on next September, to the White Isle Festival number 3.

Afterwards many of us went on to Grial for an impromptu after party and carried on partying into the early hours of the morning, courtesy of the great music played by DJs Colin Peters, Stephan Weidner and Serg.io.

Rock ‘N’ Mola, Ibiza, May 17-19, 2013

May 25th, 2013

The love child of Jill Canney @FixIbiza, Ibiza’s own rock and roll festival took place over three days in venues in and around San Jordi for its third outing. Celebrating rock and roll music and bringing back the glamour of the 50s and 60s, the festival was the antithesis to the dance music and DJ culture normally associated with the while isle.

The festival kicked off on Friday night in Can Jordi, a great little bar on the road to San Josep, where the bar to buy drinks is actually located within the local shop, and the locals collect their post from pigeon holes outside in the verandah. It was in the verandah that we were treated to a great set from local teenager Marlon Lopez. At 15, he hasn’t left school yet, but can sure play a guitar, sing and entertain an audience.

Then we trouped off to HAMC to catch the first of the shows from London band The Caezars, and what a great show it was. A 5-piece band which includes a stand-up double bass player, all sporting a great range of quiffs, they looked the part as they played fast-paced late 50s early 60s style rock and roll and rockabilly. They had the crowd jiving in no time and rocked the roof off the club. Watch the video to see them in action. http://youtu.be/P2KrORTh61Q After an impromptu song from local girl Leanne Chiltern we all continued to enjoy the vibe of the club, drink their nice cold beer and help The Caezar’s keyboard/rhythm guitarist Tim celebrate his 18th birthday.

The main event of Rock ‘N’ Mola took place on Saturday in the square behind the church in San Jordi. In true festival style the square was decked out for the event, with cars provided by The Classic Automovile Club Ibiza and a retro market where you could buy vintage clothes and accessories, have a makeover and be photographed and buy gorgeous cupcakes. And of course there was a bar for liquid refreshments. Throughout the afternoon and evening entertainment was provided by a string of DJs playing rock and roll music in between the live bands and acts, beginning with The Folkin’ Hobos.

Next we were treated to a great performance from The Capricorn Dance School who showed us how to jive. Video of the dance troupe: http://youtu.be/KgoKNuhDhIg

One of the highlights of the afternoon for me was an appearance from Elvis impersonator ELV.IS BOB. Elvis was alive and kicking in Ibiza on Saturday, and it was a great, fun performance. Video of ELV.IS BOB performing Jailhouse Rock, with some great jiving from Jill and the Ibiza Colonel Bill: http://youtu.be/uEMQpaAVij4

Local band The Moonshine Band were next to take the stage, playing their own brand of Celtic rock.

The finale was provided by another great set from The Caezars. Spread out over a larger stage than they had on Friday night, the band’s performance was more animated, and they were clearly enjoying themselves. Singer A.J. did a great job of getting the audience to move closer to the stage and engaged everyone in joining in with ‘Hail Caezar’. And Tim got to celebrate his 18th birthday again, and was presented with a birthday cake and a leopard-shaped balloon, which was tied to his guitar for the rest of the show. It was another great set from the band. For a taster, see the video: http://youtu.be/W_UWJXSAhh0

Sunday saw the festivities winding down somewhat at the nearby Boutique Hostal Salinas. Billed as ‘La Resaca’ or hangover, it was time to listen to some of the same DJs play more great music, as we chilled out by the pool in the Ibizan sunshine. Some of the stalls were also on hand to provide retro glamour in the form of vintage clothes, makeovers and photos. I stayed for a few hours, but to be honest the last two days of Rock ‘N’ Mola had left me shattered, and I left them to continue rocking.

It was a marathon of a weekend, and a brilliant mix of entertainment: live bands, DJs playing great rock and roll music, fantastic venues and an injection of 50s retro glamour. Hats off to Jill Canney @FixIbiza for all her hard work in putting it together and pulling it off. And if you get chance to see The Caezar’s live anywhere, then go see them!

A year of live music in Ibiza – 2012 roundup

October 23rd, 2012

alt-j
I ended up this year doing 3 “penpal” audio reports for Amazing Radio on Ibiza’s live music scene. It came out of the blue but since I love live music and I thought I could do something positive for Ibiza with it I thought – er yeah ok – I had no idea what on earth I was going to do…

If you follow my twitter feed you’ll know who Amazing Radio are by now – if not ask me on twitter but Amazing Radio is first thing i turn on in morning and last thing off…

It covers a complete spectrum of music and you never know what you’ll hear next – there’s no old catalog stuff, its only new music.

I did three segments and are exactly how they were aired and my personal view.

1st was a brief recap of ibiza music history & whats in store for 2012.

2nd was spur of the moment idea to i/view Alt-J at their gig at Ibiza Rocks – (double bubble win if I could do it as that was one gig I was looking forward to). I needn’t have worried as they were top blokes and great to talk to.

3rd was again another surprise and i got the email while I was at Henrys birthday get-together so I thought 2012 roundup, interview Henry and do it all in his studio using the state of the art stuff… be rude not to!

The 2nd. Interview with Alt-J at Ibiza Rocks before they supported Bloc Party back on 5th September 2012:

3rd is the Summer round up & quick chat with good friend Henry from Sonic Vista Studios:

There is the inevitable focus on all the usual suspects every summer and so I leave it to the others to cover that but I can honestly say this is the best year for live music since I’ve been here.

Been asked to do some more reports over the winter…

Thanks to Bethan & Dani for encouraging me.

White Island Music Festival, Club Punta Arabi, September 9 2012

September 11th, 2012

Sunday saw the first White Island Music Festival in Ibiza. Held in the well-appointed Club Punta Arabi in Es Cana, which has a large stage by the swimming pool, and all of it just a stone’s throw away from the sea. Starting at 4.30 in the afternoon, it was a perfect September’s day for it. Nice and sunny, but starting to cool down, and a lovely breeze wafting in off the sea.

The lineup consisted of bands from the UK and Ibiza, with DJs playing tunes in between the bands. First up were local band Nowthen who came onstage one by one, culminating in the singer appearing in a full blown Red Indian feather headdress (I’m sure there was a good reason for this). A five-piece band hailing originally from the UK, of singer, keyboards, guitar, bass and drums who played their way through a rocky, poppy, funky set, and got the festival off to a great start.

Local band Ca’n Funk as their name suggests played covers of well-known funk and soul tunes, which sounded great in the Ibizan sunshine.

UK band The Vex took things up a notch, fusing rock n’ roll with a bit of reggae, drawing slight comparisons to The Clash (which in no way is meant to be derogatory). And the DJs kept us entertained in between the bands, playing a great range of tunes that we all knew and loved, from The Artic Monkeys to The Clash and a personal favourite of mine which is rarely played, ‘Crawfish’ by Johnny Thunders and Patti Palladin.

As is the Ibizan way, most people didn’t start to arrive until late, even though the festival had been underway for awhile. Ibizan-raised Miles Island and his band thus had a larger audience, and got people dancing to his ‘beach funk’.

Next up was three-piece band The Corderoys, who gave us the most energetic performance of the day by far. See the video below.

Last to perform were London-based MT Live, who had a large crowd dancing to their funky tunes, and who ended their set by jumping into the swimming pool – it had to be done!

All in all, a great festival in a great venue, showcasing a mix of guitar-based bands, and a welcome addition to the Ibizan music calendar – let’s hope it’s the first of many more to come. It’s infinitely more exciting to see fresh and new live music being played onstage than watching a DJ cue tracks from a CD…

More information about all the bands that played is on the festival website, and watch that space for hopefully an announcement of the festival for 2013: www.whiteislandfestival.com. Also check out the White Island Music Festival FaceBook page.

“Night of Music of the Earth”- Live music at D’alt Vila in Ibiza Town

August 10th, 2012

By ClaireB

The ‘Night of Music of the Earth’, was a free concert put on as part of the week-long Fiesta de la Tierra, or Earth Festival, which honours the two patron saints’ days of Santa María and Sant Ciriac. The concert featured 3 rock bands singing in Catalan: Ses Sopris and Rels from Ibiza and Mishima from Barcelona.

The setting was perfect for an outdoor gig, taking place in the Parque Reina Sofia, which nestles beneath the massive, sturdy, illuminated walls of Dalt Vila. The walls themselves are built onto a curved face of rock and make a wonderful backdrop to the stage.

Each of the three bands were stylistically different, and put on a good show, with great sound and lighting. As non-Catalan speakers we found some of the songs were somewhat lost in translation, buy hey we’re in Ibiza, so we can’t really complain.

As is usual with these outdoor events in Ibiza, they’re well organised, with good facilities, importantly an affordable bar selling drinks and snacks, and toilet facilities. The atmosphere was relaxed, and by the time it ended at about 2.00am, there was a large, happy crowd. A great free concert, in a fantastic location, on a warm, balmy August night.
