Annual highlights on Ibiza

March 2nd, 2009

Welcome to Ibiza

A lot of people have come to visit Ibiza – and ended up falling in love with the island.

The earliest example were the Phoenicians, who arrived here over 2,000 years ago, followed by the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Moors and the pirates. Today, they have given way to a wave of tourists, painters, writers, composers and actors…

Many people immediately associate Ibiza with sun, sandy beaches, clubbing and parties. Admittedly, this little island located between the Spanish mainland and the north African coast does have the liveliest nightlife and the best clubs and venues on the planet, but this is just one of its many facets.

Ibiza has many other sides to it. Did you know, for example, that Dalt Vila, the fortified town protected by mighty walls, is a World Heritage site? Did you also know that the picturesque salt flats on Ibiza and its smaller neighbour, Formentera, which produce some of the finest salt on earth, were already well known by the Romans and the Moors – and were supplying the cities of northern Europe with “white gold” as far back as the Middle Ages? Did you know that Ibiza’s churches were designed to act as fortifications where people could flee to take refuge from marauding pirates? And did you know that one of the most renowned buccaneers, who put the fear of God into many a pirate’s heart, lived right here on Ibiza?

Ibiza is an island whose charm flourishes more than ever during the off-season months. It boasts fantastically unspoilt locations and an almost infinite number of amazing beaches – some of them rugged and untouched, others steeped in romanticism and lined with hills covered in pine trees – but above all, it is home to some of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet.

Visitors to the island are treated like friends and are more than welcome to join in the celebrations when the local communities celebrate their patron saints’ days. You’re welcome to turn up to the big medieval festivities that take place in the fortified town to mark its status as a World Heritage site and, when the island celebrates Spain’s victory over the Moors each August, once again you are welcome to join in.

Each month, we will be uncovering more of the island’s many lesser known assets – so that you can enjoy them and maybe even decide to book a holiday to be here for one of the island’s great festivals. However over the next 2 weeks we’ll look at each month with a short synopsis.

Santa Gertrudis Fiesta in Ibiza

January 8th, 2009

After midday mass on Sunday, 18th January
in the church square of Santa Gertrudis, Ibiza

santa gertrudis, ibizaIbiza traditionally marks St. Anthony’s Day with a special celebration – the Blessing of the Animals. According to the Catholic Church, St. Anthony was the patron saint of animals, which is why believers ask him to give their pets and livestock his blessing – in two towns on Ibiza, San Antonio and Santa Gertrudis.

This year, the blessing will take place in Santa Gertrudis on Sunday, 18th January. Last year, we were lucky enough to be there to witness the traditional celebration for ourselves. Here’s what we saw – maybe our report will motivate you to go and see the blessing of the animals for yourselves. It’s a wonderful experience – and gives people from other parts of the world a great insight into the heart and soul of Ibiza.
