Ibiza Rocks Hotel 2009 & Ibiza Rocks Bar M diner news

May 11th, 2009

We went over to San Antonio and Ibiza Rocks Hotel for a meeting with head Ibiza Rocks honcho Andy McKay. Afterwards he gave us a tour of the Ibiza Rocks Hotel with 2009 changes.

The “2nd pool” in the main area of the hotel has gone and the stage moved forward about 2 metres. The pagoda has also gone – this makes the area much more gig friendly. They have also changed the front Ibiza Rocks Hotel sign. There is a good fire exit that now leads outside from underneath the main gig/pool area and more safety measures have been added.

Later we went down to Bar M where they have launched their Ibiza Rocks diner – it looks good and the food is very reasonably priced – as is the beer – 2 euros for a bottle of san miguel is good value.

here’s some photos we took today:

Pete Tong, Judge Jules, Goldie & the Kaiser Chiefs in Ibiza

August 29th, 2007

It’s Tuesday night in San Antonio, so that’ll be Ibiza Rocks then at Bar M on the beach? But in the light of the ‘goings on’ of the last few weeks nobody’s quite sure what’s going to happen tonight. Could be mounted riot police if some of the more extreme gossip is to be
believed…

To test the water ‘Good Shoes’, from the London borough of Merton, were sent on and did a sterling job opening with the observation ‘when I say something just say ‘I do…’, alright?’ Thereafter they didn’t say much but delivered a tight set letting their lyrics do the rest of the chat.

It must be tough supporting a headline like the Kaiser Chiefs, but somebody’s got to do it and they made a good fist of it…

As the excitement built the roadies brought out the set lists and secured them in front of each musician’s microphone with a couple of bottles of beer. Meantime it was getting crowded as everyone and his mate turned up in numbers…

The show saw lift-off as the Kaiser Chiefs took to the stage, making a mockery of the Diario de Ibiza’s claim that the Ibiza Rocks party was over!

Tonight saw a storming gig to a packed house, including some apparently recently converted rock fans. Judge Jules, Pete Tong and Goldie were amongst a host of other ‘industry curious people’, out to see whether the baton police would be deployed, or perhaps an outbreak of common sense is in the pipeline, whereby the powerful DJ mates of the club owners point out that they’re in danger of driving everyone back into the hills again? Nobody can more accurately predict a forthcoming change of tide in the musical landscape than those whose profession it is.

Ibiza Rocks has put on some seriously kicking bands this summer and, in between times, some seriously interesting ‘indie rock’ DJ’s. So I suppose it’s only reasonable to expect the local DJ’s to cast an observatory eye over the proceedings…

A top gig and fun tomorrow – we can’t say where it will be, we would love to but we promised we wouldnt – and although we want to make certain references – we cant…
Panayiotou is the nearest we’ll go.

Ibiza Rocks – The Streets – What Next ?

August 14th, 2007

Tonight was the eagerly awaited Streets gig at Bar M, which ended in disappointment for hundreds as the local authorities pulled the plug an hour before the first expectant punters arrived.

Kasabian at Ibiza Rocks in July

A hastily written sign and a stage devoid of equipment confirmed the situation, which was followed by an endless number of gutted ticket-clutchers reluctantly accepting their money back. The worst of it was that many of these had planned their holiday dates to coincide with the gig.

It would appear that the local authorities have, once again, overlooked the effect that their actions will have in terms of global publicity for the island. The closure of Amnesia, DC 10 and Bora Bora shocked the press worldwide at the start of the season.

These closures, although repealed by a higher court, were followed by the chaining up of the Kanya bar in San Antonio and the El Ayoun restaurant in San Rafael.

In the meantime half a dozen of the most famous beach bars on the island are fighting to save their existence as, despite having been there for some thirty years, new planning restrictions don’t permit the size that their popularity has driven them to.

Last week we had the debacle of the doors being locked on Manumission by the world’s largest nightclub – Privilege – provoking their switch to nearby Amnesia. (Anybody out there want to buy the world’s biggest nightclub?)

The result will be that the global press will probably be now allocating more press to these negative ‘goings on’ than the positives that Ibiza Rocks has brought to the island over the past couple of years. In complete contrast to the past couple of weeks where every other day the mainstream broadsheets have been positive about the island – albeit maybe because a number of “faces” with lots of money have turned up…. (and who happened to go to DC10 ?)

So it happens with Bar M’s latest initiative – not for the first time this year (remember the Kelis gig), The Streets gig being cancelled so late as to cause maximum disruption to those travellers fortunate enough to get these highly prized tickets, the future looks bleak…

Will Ibiza Rocks take the same route as Manumission and switch to a venue governed by a more sympathetic (visionary?) administration?

There are a number of alternative venues elsewhere on the island who would welcome the Ibiza Rocks phenomenon with open arms. For example ‘Las Dalias’ in San Carlos, which already stages events catering for more people than Bar M can hold, almost every night of the week. It has an auditorium, huge car parking facilities, an extensive outside garden dotted with bars for before and after the gig and is, coincidentally, celebrating its 53rd birthday as the original home of live music on the island this Thursday.

It’s the sort of venue that would have no problem running gigs night after night, if demand for tickets to see any one band were high enough – and even staging the occasional outdoor gig for really special events like, say, The Arctic Monkeys?
They’re connected.

The groundswell of opinion created by the press around the world is that Ibiza Rocks must go on, and if that means another venue, even in a different part of this, lets face it, a very small island – so be it.
Ibiza will continue to rock, even in adversity.

pics from Mark Ronson & Band @ Bar M, Ibiza tonight

July 25th, 2007

p7241955l.jpg

Another great night – it gets ridiculous to say this but it was – after the politics of monday night (for another time) it was nice to get back to music

Though we have to admit we personally weren’t enamoured by their first single, the New Young Pony Club turned it around and we ended up converted. Another reason to judge a band by their live show and not by the radio.

Having watched the soundcheck earlier today of mark ronsons band we have to admit we thought it would be a funk out a la p-funk, prince, jam session (and thats no bad thing) – but it wasn’t – it was a great night of a bunch of musicians who seemed to really enjoy themsleves – and the audience went for it… highlights a plenty – (being a bit of a rocker, ‘california’ was for me the stand out) – it was pure enjoyment – after hearing the crowd last week sing to kasabian it was great to hear them do the same tonight

how anyone on this island can use politics to stand in the way of great live music is beyond us:

anyway, first off is this one, which i love:

Ibizarocks news

March 23rd, 2007

Their myspaceblog have annouced that:

ibizarocks.jpgThere will be a gig every week this summer from mid June to hopefully mid September. Some weeks we will be doing 3 or even 4 nights of live music. At the moment the week of 16th July and the very end of Aug / beginning of Sept is looking particularly loaded. Bar M will also be promoting some other concerts outside of the Ibiza Rocks brand. Mike Skinner will be making 2 apperances in Bar M this summer with his Streets Soundsystem and the keen eyed amongst you may have already noticed that LCD Soundsystem managed to announce their gig before we could ask them not to.
