Ibiza Rocks – 10 years of live music in Ibiza

July 22nd, 2015

ibiza rocks 2015

Tonight sees the 10th anniversary of my favourite thing here. If it wasn’t for Ibiza Rocks turning up I honestly doubt I would still be here after 17 years. I always enjoyed being introduced to people by Andy McKay as “this is Ade, he’s our biggest critic and biggest fan”.

It was such a breath of fresh air for me to finally get to see live music in a small venue – and in the open air… It was like a hot summer festival feeling but with only 400 odd people. Kasabian two nights running, Kaisers, CSS, Arctics, Mark Ronson – that summer 2007 changed my whole life here – every week I could go see a live band and it was normal gig hours and not waiting around in a club till 3am balking at the price of the beer…

Ibiza Rocks asked for our favourite gig of the past 10 years at the end of last summer – I can’t remember exactly what I said at that rushed moment but I know I couldn’t say just one but I know my favourite is the same. I can only go from 2007 onwards when they went fully weekly down at Bar M and I had to extend it to a top 3 but it only took a minute to know what they were and the order (though I could easily extend it to a top 20).

1. London Grammar, 7th August 2013 2. Ian Brown, 15th June 2010 3. Biffy Clyro, 24th July 2013

Ibiza Rocks Mondays

July 8th, 2015

A new edition to Ibiza Rocks this year is “Ibiza Rocks Mondays”. Set in Ibiza Rocks Bar by the beach in San Antonio, this was the original home of “Live Music Under The Stars” at Bar M which hosted gigs by the likes of Kasabian, Arctic Monkys and the Kaiser Chiefs. These gigs will all be free.

Monday Rocks lineup
13/07 The Bulletproof Bomb
20/07 This Feeling presents Young Kato
27/07 Prides
03/08 Karen Harding
10/08 Harley Maxwell
17/08 Fickle Friends
14/09 Boxed In

Kicking off the inaugural Monday Rocks is hotly tipped London five-piece The Bulletproof Bomb – a band Rocks has supported from the start and helped to develop since playing Ibiza Rocks the Snow in 2013. More recently the band played Rocks’ new UK talent event ‘Fresh Out the Box’ in London and this summer they play Croatia Rocks Festival alongside The Vaccines and Clean Bandit. The Bulletproof Bomb are set to kick of Monday Rocks with a bang on 13th July before supporting Catfish & the Bottlemen at Ibiza Rocks on 15th July.

Next up and in collaboration with leading UK club night This Feeling, Monday Rocks will welcome synth-pop six-piece Young Kato to the Ibiza Rocks Bar on 20th July. Their much-hyped debut album ‘Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow’ was released in April followed by an 18-date headline tour including a sold out show at The Garage, London. With fans including Fearne Cotton and Zane Lowe and an ever-growing fan base, Young Kato are making their mark and bringing synths together with sunshine vibes at the Ibiza Rocks Bar.

Fresh from a standout set on the John Peel stage at Glastonbury, Glasgow band Prides are riding high and ready to smash the festival circuit this summer. Since playing the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony to 7.5 million people on BBC1 last year, headlining the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading & Leeds Festival, embarking on their first headline tour and now about to release their highly anticipated debut album ‘The Way Back Up’ this Scottish trio are about to go stratospheric. This special gig is a big coup for Monday Rocks on 27th July.

Karen Harding may be a fresh face on the scene but has already scored a Top 10 single with

Miles Kan at Ibiza Rocks Bar 2013

Miles Kan at Ibiza Rocks Bar 2013

her MNEK-produced ‘Say Something’ and her stunning vocals feature on Belgian house duo Arches new track ‘New Love’ which is set to be one of the standout soundtracks of summer. Karen Harding plays Monday Rocks on 3rd August before supporting Clean Bandit at Ibiza Rocks on 5th August.

Ibiza resident turned UK hip hop social media sensation Harley Maxwell takes the lead on 10th August to represent the new element of the UK hip hop scene with tracks from his ‘Summer Days’ EP, all written in and inspired by Ibiza. This will be a special, solo homecoming show before Harley supports hip hip icons De La Soul at Ibiza Rocks on 12th August.

Brighton five-piece Fickle Friends are one of the most blogged bands on the planet as well as being one of the most genuinely exciting new talents. They amassed over 750,000 Soundcloud plays from their debut single ‘SWIM’ last year, became HypeMachine’s 25th most blogged artist of 2014, received critical acclaim from Zane Lowe, Billboard & BBC Introducing and are a firm festival favourite. Currently on their first UK headline tour which included a sold out date at London’s Barfly, the band will take a special break to the Balearics for Monday Rocks on 17th August.

Closing the first summer of Monday Rocks is London quartet Boxed In who have received massive support from Radio 1 and 6 Music since releasing their self-titled debut album earlier this year. Between a summer full of UK and US shows and new track ‘Full Circle’ with Berlin based DJ and Producer George Fitzgerald blowing up, the time is now to catch these guys in an intimate venue at Monday Rocks on 14th September.

Ibiza Rocks 2015 Opening Party, Years & Years and Blonde, June 17th 2015

June 19th, 2015

This wednesday saw the opening gig of Ibiza Rocks, in what is its 10th birthday year, with Years & Years and Blonde on the line-up. I arrived at the venue at about 8.45 to find a massive queue extending up the hill outside the venue – a promising sight and a sign that it was going to be a busy night. Bristol duo Blonde were first to take to the stage, complete with full band and two singers, who did a sterling job at working the crowd, which was beginning to fill the space in the front of the stage.

ibizarocks170615-yearsandyearsBoth acts on the bill currently have singles in the top 30 of the Official Singles Chart in the UK and the crowd clearly knew and loved them, as the screams, dancing and arms waving in the air testified. They ended their set with a rendition of Corona’s ‘Rhythm of the Night’, which got everybody dancing and singing along and they left the stage on a high.

Headliners Years & Years won the ‘BBC Sound of 2015′ award, their last single, ‘King’ reached number one in the UK charts and their first album ‘Communion’ is being released next month, so they’re a hot ticket at the moment.

The trio from London complete with drummer came onstage just before 11pm, with much screaming from the crowd as singer Olly entered the stage. The screaming continued for much of their performance, especially when Olly took off his sweatshirt before the second song. They wowed the now packed venue with their synthy, poppy, dancey tunes and the crowd loved every minute of it.

There have been a few changes made to the venue for this year, with a new and larger VIP area to the right of the stage, which opens up more of the balcony area on the left, giving great views of the stage from above and creating an area where the press, friends and locals can congregate.

All in all it was a great start to the season and Ibiza is rocking again!

Rudimental, Spandau Ballet, Shura & Slaves added to Ibiza Rocks 2015

April 15th, 2015

ibiza rocks 2015
Rudimental, Spandau Ballet, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Shura, Slaves,
Krept & Konan, Karen Harding & Sam Sure added.

catfish & the bottlemenNew bands announced include Rudimental, Catfish & The Bottlemen and Spandau Ballet who will return to play Ibiza for the first time since 1981 when they pioneered an electronic music revolution.  Supports come from  Shura, Slaves, Krept & Konan, Blonde, Karen Harding and Sam Sure.
Rudimental said:

We can’t wait to come back. Ibiza Rocks is a lovely story for us, we saw Dizzee Rascal at Ibiza Rocks when on holiday there and then a year later Feel The Love happened and we DJ’d with Disclosure and Zane Lowe and then played live last year which was one of the best nights of our summer. There’s such history there for us. It’s always such a good vibe and the idea to do a party in a hotel is just brilliant. As soon as we finish a gig at Ibiza Rocks, we just want to get in the crowd and party with everyone. We’re part of that culture so we want to rave as well. Ibiza Rocks, we love you. Rudimental are coming for you!!

Gary Kemp, Spandau Ballet said:

Back in 1981 Spandau were playing one off events at the hottest clubs across the world from New York to St Tropez to the Beat Route in London and The Ku Club had a reputation for being pretty outrageous, in fact the night before we played we went to the club and someone released a bull onto the dancefloor which ended up in the swimming pool. We took over some of our London friends, before us no British people went to these clubs and that was when the conversation between the two nightlife’s began and Ibiza club culture was born. We’re really looking forward to going back and playing Ibiza Rocks.

Shane Murray, Brand Director said:

The energy created by a live band playing under the stars in Ibiza is unique and to celebrate 10 years of Ibiza Rocks with some of the best acts in the world is truly special. The significance of Spandau Ballets 1981 gig at Ku probably hasn’t been recognised and we’re hugely proud to be bringing them back to the island for the first time in almost 35 years. They allowed for the meeting of two cultures, which is something we did with Rocks again almost 25 years later. We have mass appreciation for the greats and huge passion for new talent. We booked Rudimental for their first ever Ibiza show and have watched them soar. We’ve got the hottest guitar band of the moment in Catfish & the Bottlemen coming back as headliners. Then of course there’s the gig that everyone is already talking about, The Libertines. This summer will be a proud one. 10 Years of Rocks… it’s only just the beginning.

The Libertines to headline Ibiza Rocks 10th Birthday 2015

February 17th, 2015

ibiza rockspete doherty - ibiza rocks barSo the long awaited news is finally here – We’ve been proud to have been championing Ibiza Rocks from their start at Bar M back in 2007. It was a complete first to have live bands out in the open air and was such a breath of fresh air and something completely new. We’ve seen how Ibiza Rocks have developed from the little Music Box room at Privilege to consistently putting on THE best live gigs here in Ibiza.

Opening the start of the 14 week series of gigs will be BRIT nominees Years & Years on 17th June, drum ‘n’ bass duo Sigma on the 24th June and one of our current faves Jungle & Shura on 1st July.

The biggy though is The Libertines returning to play the headline 10th Birthday show on the 22nd July. Then follows returning Clean Bandit on the 5th August and party expert Fatboy Slim on the 2nd September and closing the season will be festi stalwarts The Courteeners on the 16th September.

Andy McKay, Founder & CEO, Ibiza Rocks Group

The ultimate defining moment of Rocks was when we discovered that our future lay outdoors and that was the night Babyshambles played Bar M. It was the moment we found our time slot before midnight and the moment we discovered the energy created by a live band playing under the stars. It all clicked. It was that realisation that changing the soundtrack changed absolutely everything. By doing something that radical we skewed the whole direction of the future of Ibiza. To be celebrating 10 years on with a headline show from The Libertines, a truly iconic rock band reunited, is going to be one hell of a seminal moment for Ibiza Rocks. Roll on the next 10 years.

ibiza rocks - dirty pretty thingsCarl Barat, The Libertines

Ibiza Rocks is one of the greatest gigs there is. The strange and debauched energy of the place never fails to provide the perfect backdrop for bacchanalian reverie of the highest order. Everyone there is gonna be ‘mad for it’, I can’t wait. One of those nights actually worth the bastard hangover. Bring it.

Once again MTV will be documenting the series of gigs as their exclusive broadcast sponsor:

The network plans to broadcast a number of exclusive artist interviews, live performances and all the highlights from the 14-week long series from the Ibiza Rocks Hotel this summer hosted by Laura Whitmore.
