Jake Bugg and Catfish and the Bottlemen, Ibiza Rocks, July 16 2014

ibizarocks160714-catfishandthebottlemenThis week’s performance at Ibiza Rocks was from Jake Bugg.

Support was from Catfish and the Bottlemen, whose debut album ‘The Balcony’ is being released on September 15. I’d heard their latest single ‘Fallout’ played on BBC6 Music a few times and liked what I’d heard. As soon as I saw them onstage wearing skinny jeans and dressed from head to toe in black, I knew they were going to be good. And they were!

The four-piece band from Llandudno belted out their indie-rock tunes, to the large and appreciative crowd who had gathered to see them. They quickly got everyone dancing and they were the best support band so far this summer, against some stiff competition.

Headliner Jake Bugg came onstage at 10.40, to a barrage of screams from the girls at the front of the stage. This was the third outing for Jake Bugg at Ibiza Rocks. He supported Ben Howard back in 2012 and I was gutted to only catch his last couple of songs as he was on really early.

ibizarocks160714-jakebuggReturning last year to headline at the opening party I was able to catch and enjoy all his set, and this year he is back, with a second album under his belt, and enjoying huge success, both in the UK and internationally.

He’s now reached the grand old age of 20, which is incredibly young when you listen to the maturity of his songs and witness his undeniable talent in the flesh. He switched effortlessly between playing acoustic and electric guitars and performing both solo and with his backing band of drummer and bassist. Playing a mix of songs from both his albums he oozes talent, but he isn’t particularly talkative and doesn’t engage with his audience much, opting just to wow them with his songs.

The pace changed frequently from solo ballads to fast-paced songs such as ‘Slumville Sunrise’, ‘Kingpin’ and ‘What Doesn’t Kill You’. He played for well over an hour, ending with ‘Lightning Bolt’, choosing not to give us an encore. It’s not that we didn’t deserve one – the crowd was behind him all the way and loved every minute. Encores just shouldn’t be taken for granted. Another top gig with two great acts at Ibiza Rocks, and evidence that there’s plenty of demand for guitar bands in Ibiza.

Afterwards it was again off to Pikes for the Rock Nights 9th Anniversary party. A very long but extremely fun night with Colin Peters on the decks, random piano playing and of course Sunny’s karaoke in the bathroom.

Jake played:

Kentucky
There’s a Beast And We All Feed It
Trouble Town
Seen It All
Me And You
Storm Passes Away
Two Fingers
Messed Up Kids
Ballad of Mr Jones
Broken
Simple Pleasures
Green Man
Kingpin
Taste It
Slumville Sunrise
What Doesn’t Kill You
Folsom Prison Blues
Lightning Bolt
