White Island Music Festival, Dalt Vila, Ibiza Town, 07/09/13

The second White Isle Music Festival took place in Ibiza on Saturday 7th September. This year it moved to the spectacular setting of Bastion St. Pere in Dalt Vila. With a line-up of up-and-coming bands from the UK and musicians living in Ibiza, it promised to be a great little festival, and it was. Only the forecasted rain threatened to spoil the proceedings, but in the end it didn’t!

We arrived just as the sun had set behind the hills in the distance leaving a pinky glow lighting up the sky from behind, providing a great vista from the site. The stage was in front of the huge walls of Dalt Vila – an amazing backdrop for the performances.

Opening the festival were Lost Podenco, which saw Ibizan resident Phil Dobie playing live for the first time with a backing band. Phil’s melodic tunes really came alive with a band and they soon had the growing crowd down the front of the stage to watch them. The heavens started to open during the last song, but they managed to get through to the end of it, with the help of someone sheltering Phil under an umbrella. Fortunately that was the worst of the weather for the night.

In between the bands DJ Spider played some tunes and kept us entertained. Next up onstage were Hot Ice, who funked it up a bit with their fusion of soul, jazz, spanish, rock and african music.

Plum aka Scottish singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Shona Maguire took it down a notch, accompanied by a bassist and a bank of electronic samples. She recently won “Best Electronic Act” at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards (2013). Her soaring vocals over the electro beats were very atmospheric, especially against the backdrop of the now floodlit Dalt Vila walls. She experienced a few technical problems throughout when some of the samples didn’t want to play, but it didn’t spoil what was a great and moving set.

Switching musical genres again to something much more rock ‘n’ roll, next were 4-piece band Burning Beaches, who announced that they were from London, England. Wielding their guitars across the stage, they upped the pace and got the crowd moving.

Whilst the stage was prepared for the next band we were treated to an unscheduled acoustic performance from local Rick Bargiel, in place of Pixie Ramsey who unfortunately couldn’t make it. Rick played a couple of blinding songs he had written the other day and got a great reception for them.

Last but by no means least were The Black Tambourines, a 4-piece band from Cornwall. Their bio said that they “lace grunge-ridden garage rock with surf pop sensibilities” and that’s exactly what they did. And apparently they’ve been tipped as “ones to watch” by The NME, so keep an eye out for them playing near you soon.

All in all, it was a really enjoyable festival, with a diverse range of live performers, who all played great sets in a fantastic setting. Roll on next September, to the White Isle Festival number 3.

Afterwards many of us went on to Grial for an impromptu after party and carried on partying into the early hours of the morning, courtesy of the great music played by DJs Colin Peters, Stephan Weidner and Serg.io.
