Friday July 12th saw one of the hottest actors around at the moment DJing in Ibiza at ‘W.A.R.’ at Ibiza Rocks and then at ‘7 Wallace’ at Ibiza Rocks House @ Pikes Hotel. Idris has recently had starring roles in The Wire and Luther. Fresh from the red carpet in LA for the premier of his latest film Pacific Rim, I couldn’t wait to find out what he was going to play at each of the very different venues. Ibiza Rocks holds about 2500 people and he was DJing back to back with Doorly, followed by DJ Wire and Example. The venue at Ibiza Rocks House (Pikes) is a much smaller, more intimate affair, for maybe a few hundred people.
I had seen London-born Idris interviewed by Pete Tong at the recent International Music Summit held in Ibiza in May, and so I know about his background as a DJ. He was a DJ before he became an actor, and used his income from DJ gigs to survive whilst he worked at his acting. Now he’s in a privileged position to be able to play the odd high profile DJ gig in between his acting commitments. It was a fascinating and candid interview. The full 30 minute video of the interview can be seen below and it’s well worth watching, as Idris talks about how he started as a DJ and actor.
I was also able to experience a DJ set from him at one of the IMS Dalt Vila parties and he didn’t disappoint. So I was really looking forward to a double dose of Idris DJing and to see how he treated the two different settings/audiences.
First up was the Friday regular night ‘We Are Rockstars (W.A.R.)’ at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel, where Idris was DJing back to back with W.A.R. resident DJ Doorly, before headliners DJ Wire and Example. Appearing on the main stage at 21.40, the venue was packed. He had already done a DJ set earlier on in the evening at Ushuaia at Pete Tong’s ‘Le Grand Bazaar’ party, and was clearly fired up.
For the hour that Idris and Doorly were onstage for, we were treated to a great mix of tunes, including ‘Don’t you want me’ by the Human League, ‘Holiday’ by Madonna, ‘Never too much’ by Luther Vandross, ‘Kiss’ by Prince, ‘Thinking of you’ by Sister Sledge and ‘Pass the dutchie’ by Musical Youth which I hadn’t heard for years. The visuals and light show put on by the Ibiza Rock’s crew were a stunning complement to the great music that was being played, and the crowd loved it.
It was clear that Idris really enjoyed himself, dancing behind the decks and waving his arms in the air, and by the time he had finished his set he had worked up quite a sweat. One of the highlights of the set for me was when he dropped ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis. Everyone started singing along – it was a great choice of record to play for the crowd and quite something to witness. See the video below.
Afterwards, we took advantage of the new ‘Rock and Ride’ free shuttle bus service which runs between the Ibiza Rocks House (Pikes) and the Ibiza Rocks Hotel. Not only was it free, but it much more fun than getting a taxi. Nice one Ibiza Rocks!
When we arrived at Ibiza Rocks House, the party had already started in Freddie’s, and we were treated to some great funky tunes which got people dancing around (and on) Freddie’s bed (the place where most of the dancing takes place). Idris made his entrance in the DJ booth in a change of outfit after about an hour.
The tunes he played were more funky and soulful than his set at W.A.R., kicking off with ‘All this love (that I’m giving)’ by Gwen McCrae and followed by a bit of Michael Jackson. The room around the DJ booth was quickly heaving with dancing partygoers wanting to dance and catch a glimpse of Idris, and remained so for most of the night. I don’t remember what else he played, because I forgot to take notes and I was too busy enjoying myself!
There were also DJs playing outside in the courtyard throughout the night. Idris returned to the decks later on, and the party finally ended at about 6.00 am in the morning. Idris is doing another 6 nights of 7 Wallace on Friday nights over the summer months, and I can’t wait to go to another one.
