This week’s gig was the return of Tinie Tempah to Ibiza Rocks – his third headline gig at the venue. For me, this was the third time I had seen him live, and whilst it’s not my chosen genre of music to see live, I knew that he put on a slick show and that it should be a good gig.
Support was from the London rapper G-FrSH, who took to the stage on schedule at 9.20pm, as the sun was setting on another glorious hot day in Ibiza. The area in front of the stage was already packed in anticipation of getting a good view view of Tinie Tempah, and it wasn’t long before he had the crowd with him, as he prowled across the stage, with his DJ behind him. Girls screamed every time he grabbed hold of his crotch! The crowd loved him, and he was a great support act for Tinie.

By the time Tinie Tempah was due to take to the stage at 10.40, the place was packed. The DJ finished, Tinie’s backing band came onstage, and the crowd went wild, chanting “Tinie, Tinie, Tinie, Tinie …”. I had never witnessed scenes like this before at Ibiza rocks. Normally the crowd is appreciative of the acts, but I’d never seen such vociferous chanting before someone took to the stage. It set the scene for what was to come, and when Tinie appeared onstage with his sidekick DJ Charlesy after what seemed like a minute or two, the crowd went mental.
This year with a full backing band of guitar, keyboards and drummer, the sound was much more powerful, and for me a more interesting live experience. It’s not particularly my favourite genre of music, but you couldn’t fault Tinie, DJ Charlesy and his band’s performance. They were tight, knew exactly what they were doing, and clearly had a lot of fun doing it. Tinie remarked before they kicked into hit single ‘It’s written in the stars’ that he was “feeling the love tonight Ibiza”, and that he couldn’t believe the success that he’s had and tells everyone they can do what they want to and that it’s written in the stars. It sounds a tad contrived, but I believed he meant every word of it. And it was very moving, as the audience sang the first few bars of the song for him.
After ‘Trampoline’ and ‘Earthquake’, they played from ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’, saying how they usually change the words in the song from ‘Ibiza’ to ‘Poland’ to suit wherever they are playing, but they don’t need to do that tonight. However, Charlesy suggests they should just sing from ‘Ibiza 2 Ibiza’, which is exactly what they do, and the crowd goes even more crazy, and start throwing beer into the air. For ‘Drinking from the bottle’, G-Frsh comes on with some bottles of champagne (it could have been cava) and he and Charlesy go onto the roof of the exit tunnel to the right of the stage and spray champagne over the crowd. Tinie does the same from the front of the stage. And so another level of mentalness is reached. Unfortunately I didn’t get any photos of this, as I was busily writing down notes of what I was witnessing and missed the best part of it by the time I got my camera out.
During ‘Pass Out’ they announce that they want to take it up another level, and want everyone to take their tops off, including the girls if they’re wearing another layer, and spin them around their heads like a helicopter, to which of course, most people do. And they really do manage to take it up another level!
The atmosphere was electric – if you could bottle it and let it out for future events you would be onto a winner! So much so, that after Tinie and his band left the stage after Pass Out (there was no encore), lots of people stayed behind to dance to the superb music that was being played. Normally people leave pretty soon after the act finishes, but last night they didn’t want to go home, such was the energy and vibe in the place.
Tinie is definitely on top of his game at the moment, and it was an amazing spectacle to see the crowd going crazy with his every move. Another great Ibiza Rocks gig that will surely go down in the history books.
