The Vaccines & Palma Violets, Ibiza Rocks 19/06/13

This gig was one of the Ibiza Rocks lineups I was most looking forward to for the 2013 season – The Vaccines with support from Palma Violets. I had seen The Vaccines when they played Ibiza Rocks two years ago and I’m really liking what I’ve heard from Palma Violets so far, and really wanted to see them live.

ibiza-rocks-2013-palma-violetsPalma Violets hit the stage at 9.20 and immediately showed that they meant business. The four youngsters from London, guitarist Samuel, bassist Chilli, keyboard player Peter and drummer William, worked through their energetic set with great enthusiasm and skill, and won the crowd over in no time. Samuel and Chilli shared the vocals, as they played tracks from their first album ‘180’, which was released in February this year. They commanded the front of the stage, working up a sweat in the process. At the end of their set, most of the band jumped off the stage into the crowd to join them for a dance. A great end to a great set. My only complaint was that they didn’t play for long enough, which is often the case with the support bands.

ibiza-rocks-2013-vaccinesThe Vaccines followed at 10.40, after some great tunes from the Ibiza Rocks DJs whilst the stage was being set up. They played for about an hour, getting through a massive 17 song set, achievable because most of their songs are really short. It was a fast-paced set of pure, energetic, power-poppy, indie rock, and the crowd loved it, cranking up a gear for their single ‘If You Wanna’.

They also played a new song for us ‘Melody Calling’, with singer Justin taking up an acoustic guitar, and which went down very well with the crowd. Material for the third album? They ended with Norgaard, and left the stage to feedback from Freddie’s guitar – I love it when bands do that! There was no encore, but in my opinion we got the perfect ending to the gig.

I enjoyed them much more than when I saw them two years ago. Back then, they didn’t have many songs and the set was quite short. They’ve also matured onstage, and there was a much rockier edge to their newer material and their performance. It was a great gig – two bands that complimented each other perfectly, and a brilliant night of live rock music. The crowd loved it and it was clear that the bands loved it too – everyone left happy.
