June 5th saw the opening of Ibiza Rocks for the summer season of 2013, its 8th year, and something we had eagerly been waiting for since September when the venue shut its doors for the last time at the end of last summer. Held at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio, Ibiza Rocks provides the island’s weekly live music fix for those of us who prefer our music played live. The gigs are played outdoors in the courtyard of the hotel, next to the pool – it’s a great venue.
There were a few changes this year. The stage has been moved to the far end of the courtyard in an effort to curtail the sound within the venue and keep the neighbours happy, and the stage is also higher, which makes it easier to see the band but harder to take photos from the pit unless you’re very tall. Previously the VIP balcony provided a good spot for watching the band and taking footage as it was directly opposite the stage, but now it runs along the side, so much time was spent identifying the best places in the venue to get good vantage points. And there’s also a swish new DJ booth built above the bar on the right hand side, providing a great view of the stage and the venue for regular DJs Ste-V-Something, Colin Peters and Nicola Bear as they spin their great indie tunes.
First on stage was Mancunian born Findlay, who was brilliant. Ibiza Rocks has a knack of booking great up-and-coming bands and artists for the support slots, and this gig was no exception. She’s only small, but commands the front of the stage and has a strong, powerful voice that rises over the edgy, rocky music. The only disappointment was that they only played for 30 minutes – it was too short, I wanted more!

After some more great records played by DJ Nicola Bear, Jake Bugg took to the stage to huge applause. Jake supported Ben Howard at Ibiza Rocks in 2012, and as a reflection of his huge success since then, has returned to headline the opening night of the 2013 season.
At only 19 years old, the singer-songwriter’s debut album released at the end of last year has taken the UK music scene by storm, reaching number 1 in the UK charts. He’s incredibly talented, and has the audience captivated as he effortlessly switches between playing acoustic and electric guitars, sometimes accompanied by his backing band, sometimes playing solo.
He’s living proof that guitar music is not dead and that there’s an audience out there for it.

Afterwards we went on to the Ibiza Rocks House (Pikes Hotel) to carry on partying (you’ve got to do the opening night in style). We were entertained on the decks by DJs Andy Dean and Steve Parkinson who had everyone dancing their socks off to the likes of David Bowie, Blondie, The Clash, Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses amongst many more great tunes.
A great way to end the night. Rock and roll is alive and kicking in Ibiza, and long may it do so!
