After last weeks announcement that Elton John had been confirmed for the Ibiza 123 Rocktronic Festival in San Antonio in July, there was a press conference to be held at 7pm down at Cafe Del Mar next to the area where the festival will be held.
6.50pm. Arrived at Cafe del Mar after having a bit of a wander round the festival site. It’s going to take some doing to get it prepared for the festival but as one person said “they have a clean sheet with the area”. There are a few film crews and a couple of Barcardi bars set up with quite a few bottles. One of the most common words spoken in the music industry came to mind “is it free”…. There’s some classic chillout music on the small but very clean sounding outside sound system. It also looks like the sun may oblige with a classic Sunset Strip sunset – even after last nights torrential downpour.
7.10pm. People are starting to arrive. No move yet on the Barcardi bars. It’s all pretty low key so far which is not surprising given the venue – lots of air-kisses and handshakes.
7.30pm Deep in conversation with a couple of friends and realise the press conference is about to start in front of us – all of a sudden I realise the area in front of Cafe del Mar is packed. Pino from Live Nation says his bit in Spanish and announces Elton John has been confirmed to play the festival. I think its fair to say that everyone there knew that anyway but there was applause. (Given that Livenation had actually announced this last week)
Pino then went on to talk about a series of “masterclasses” in conjunction with the Berklee College of Music. These will be held in a special airconditioned area within the festival site with the likes of Bill Curbishley (Manager of the Who & Robert Plant – hint hint, this rumour won’t go away) Marcel Avram, Claude Nobbs, the legendary creator of the Montreaux Jazz Festival and Bill Roedy the man behind MTV Europe.
There was then some thanking by the local dignatories of San Antonio, Major etc
and er that was it and no questions – so sadly no more news or announcements. Everyone then attacked the Barcardi bars for some rather delicious mojitos. What was revealed if you grabbed a poster or press pack were the lineups for each of the days:
Sunday 1st July
- Guetta / Fatboy Slim / Tiesto
- Japanses Popstars
- DJ Pippi
Monday 2nd July

*plus the obligatory “more to be confirmed”

We’ll be doing a further q&a with one of the organisers over the next 2 days for some more indepth qustions.
The site as it is this afternoon:
This is what you’d see from the stage – ok, so it’ll look a little different in July…
