RocknRave at Ibiza Rocks House

April 15th, 2012

To top off the panels at The International Music Summit Get Tested! Back to The Phuture and Ibiza Rocks House present RocknRave.

A Q&A panel of unique guests hosted by Back to The Phuture’s Mark Jones at the legendary Ibiza Rocks House. RocknRave will feature leading lights that played a part in driving Ibiza’s party scene, each with an exclusive insight on what went on. Mark Jones will be steering panel members to talk about what they have done and how they have got to where they are now?

With his profound knowledge of music, not to mention his contribution, from the early days of Acid House parties to Wall of Sound via Propellerheads, Jacques Lu Cont, Grace Jones and Tiesto to Back to the Phuture on BBC Radio 6, Mark Jones will lead the discussion with insight and a bit of comedy.

Previously known as Pikes, Ibiza Rocks House will form the background to the discussion. Ibiza Rocks House is steeped in Ibizencan cultural history. It’s former owner Tony Pike hosted wild Freddie Mercury fuelled parties and these days it’s the venue for the Ibiza Rocks after-parties throughout the summer.

The event will ultimately raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust’s flagship awareness campaign Get Tested! Raising awareness through music and discussion is a powerful way to effect change, get more people tested and in turn save lives. Deaths from hepatitis outnumber those of HIV now and they are all unnecessary deaths.

The event will be held on May 26 at 5pm, Entrance is free so come early to avoid disappointment. Names announced shortly.

Q&A with Danny Whittle about the Ibiza 123 Festival

April 4th, 2012

After the press conference at Cafe del Mar yesterday to launch the new Ibiza 123 Festival in July – with the likes of Sting, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz, David Guetta, Tiesto, Pete Tong and a host of others – we had a number of background questions we thought might be useful to ask.

So who else to ask than our friend Danny Whittle, the man at Pacha and one of the founders and organisers of the IMS but more importantly a senior part of the Ibiza 123 Festival team.

Hi Danny, how did the festival actually come about as there hasn’t really been an outdoor festival since the MTV one in 2000, as the 2001 MTV event that was supposed to take place at the Hippodromo was knocked back at the last minute and had to move to Privilege. I assume it’s been in the planning for quite awhile.

To be honest its not been in the planning for a long time. Myself, Ben Turner and Pete Tong met up with Pino Sagliocco last Septemeber. We sat down at his beach house and decided we all wanted to do a festival in Ibiza. We then came up with the rocktronic concept of fusing the genres and when we realised the dates we wanted to do the name just followed.

There seems to be a positive change in San Antonios’ attitude to live music over past few years how did the initial discussions go with the town hall? or was the initial contact with the Consell ?

The town hall and the consul have been hugly accommodating and have really helped us right down the line, we cant thank them enough. They really want to reshape the image of San Antonio and we think this is a great way to start.

There are a number of acts that are also on the Rock in Rio festival in Madrid that takes place either side of Ibiza 123 – I’m guessing there’s a link ?

Yes our partners with IMS are Live Nation, Pino is the chairman for Spain and Portugal.

Can you elaborate more on the “masterclass” that will be taking place onsite ? (what’s it about, who can attend, format etc)

It will be hosted by the IMS and will be seminars and panels by some of the biggest professionals in the music industry, with some very interesting stories to tell.

There’s going to be quite a bit of work involved in just clearing the site and levelling the ground. walking around it seems there’s a natural “bowl” in front of where the stage will be and I’m guessing that the vip areas, bar & toilets will be in the “upper section”. What sort of timescale is there for preparing the site ?

You would be amazed how fast these things can be done with big machines, we will be using a lot of the earth to sculpt vip areas and to mask toilet sections etc. This will save a huge amount on production costs and scaffolding/fencing.

On the plan there is a big dipper, rollercoaster & a walk through waterfall – the waterfall seems intriging how will that work ?

Well we really want to put a full funfair there so people can be entertained in other ways. The waterfall idea is so people can bring their swim suits and a towel and walk through to cool off. Although everyone will get one pass out wristband so they can leave and come back, to change, eat, swim etc.

Also on the plan is a “smoking area” – is this necessary since it’s an outdoor event ? not heard of an festival that restricts smoking ? what’s the reasoning behind this?

Well we were thinking for a sponsor area cigars or those bubbly pipe thingys, we are still thinking on that.

On the Live Nation ticket site it says there is an age restriction of over 16’s – do you have any plans for a crèche etc for families – given the nature of some of the artists ?

Actually kids can come if they are with a parent and yes we will have a full entertaining crèche.

Will there be any plans for a “park & ride” or buses from for example Ibiza Town, Playa d’en Bossa, Santa Eulalia as obviously congestion could potentially get quite bad around the site area?

Yes totally, although we have a huge parking area we do realise many kids don’t have cars so we will put on huge amount of transport.

I was told there will packages in conjunction with TUI (the tour operator) – will people have a choice of hotels etc and areas to initially stay ?

Yes although TUI will be supplying that.

Brilliant, thanks for your time Danny and we look forward to it!

Ibiza 123 Festival Press conference tonight, review & lineups

April 4th, 2012

After last weeks announcement that Elton John had been confirmed for the Ibiza 123 Rocktronic Festival in San Antonio in July, there was a press conference to be held at 7pm down at Cafe Del Mar next to the area where the festival will be held.

6.50pm. Arrived at Cafe del Mar after having a bit of a wander round the festival site. It’s going to take some doing to get it prepared for the festival but as one person said “they have a clean sheet with the area”. There are a few film crews and a couple of Barcardi bars set up with quite a few bottles. One of the most common words spoken in the music industry came to mind “is it free”…. There’s some classic chillout music on the small but very clean sounding outside sound system. It also looks like the sun may oblige with a classic Sunset Strip sunset – even after last nights torrential downpour.

7.10pm. People are starting to arrive. No move yet on the Barcardi bars. It’s all pretty low key so far which is not surprising given the venue – lots of air-kisses and handshakes.

7.30pm Deep in conversation with a couple of friends and realise the press conference is about to start in front of us – all of a sudden I realise the area in front of Cafe del Mar is packed. Pino from Live Nation says his bit in Spanish and announces Elton John has been confirmed to play the festival. I think its fair to say that everyone there knew that anyway but there was applause. (Given that Livenation had actually announced this last week)

Pino then went on to talk about a series of “masterclasses” in conjunction with the Berklee College of Music. These will be held in a special airconditioned area within the festival site with the likes of Bill Curbishley (Manager of the Who & Robert Plant – hint hint, this rumour won’t go away) Marcel Avram, Claude Nobbs, the legendary creator of the Montreaux Jazz Festival and Bill Roedy the man behind  MTV Europe.

There was then some thanking by the local dignatories of San Antonio, Major etc

and er that was it and no questions – so sadly no more news or announcements. Everyone then attacked the Barcardi bars for some rather delicious mojitos. What was revealed if you grabbed a poster or press pack were the lineups for each of the days:

Sunday 1st July

  • Sting
  • Labrinth
  • Guetta / Fatboy Slim / Tiesto
  • Japanses Popstars
  • DJ Pippi

Monday 2nd July

  • Elton John vs PNAU
  • Tinie Tempah
  • Axwell / Steve Angello / 2ManyDJS
  • Alfredo / Pete Tong / Rob da Bank

Tuesday 3rd July

  • Lenny Kravitz vs Luciano
  • M83
  • Azari & III / Totally Enourmous Extinct Dinosaurs
  • Mr Blake / Troublemakers

*plus the obligatory “more to be confirmed”

Can also confirm that day tickets at €65 will be onsale on 13th April. There will also be tour packages available in conjunction with travel operator TUI as well as VIP packages.

We’ll be doing a further q&a with one of the organisers over the next 2 days for some more indepth qustions.

The site as it is this afternoon:

This is what you’d see from the stage – ok, so it’ll look a little different in July…

Ben Howard added to Ibiza Rocks 2012

April 3rd, 2012

Singer/Songwriter Ben Howard has been added to this years Ibiza Rocks on 4th July 2012.

Without a doubt, Ibiza is one of my favourite places on the planet. I’ve been to the island every year of my life and genuinely stoked to get there for a big show. My Grandad opened one of the first bars on the old port so that’s my little claim to fame over there. Great to be part of the whole Ibiza Rocks vibe, Ibiza’s always had a big gap when it comes to bands with guitars so great to be included really. I can’t wait.”
