Ibiza Music Academy

7th December the Ibiza Music Cluster had a press conference to announce they have found a permanent home, and a splendid one it is too! They are to be found at the Ibiza Music Academy alongside the Consell at Avenida España 15 in Ibiza Town.

The impressive newly built six storey ‘Conservatori de Musica y Danza d’Eivissa’ is largely occupied by the various components of the Ibiza Music Cluster – and a positive and ambitious crowd they are.

The Cluster is a concept thought up, and funded by the EU, which aims to take advantage of Ibiza’s position as the global HQ of electronic music for over two decades to create an academy par excellence to which people who are passionate about music will flock from around the world to be at the cutting edge of the evolution of electronic music. Lofty ideals indeed…

By ‘people who are passionate about music’ they are referring to those who live and breathe the art form, rather than those who think it might be a nice simple route to achieving fame and fortune on a computer in their bedroom. (X Factor wannabe’s need not apply).

To the self-selected few the Cluster offers courses that bridge classical musical knowledge with modern DJs. The aim is to teach participants how to make ‘musical’ music rather than remixed cuts overlaid on beats.

The one week courses will see students receive both the practical training and theory required by DJs and producers in the modern world to the point where they can develop their own professional high quality live production using one of the latest digital production tools (iPad) and cutting edge software (Reaktor). However, the training will be equally applicable to other sequencers or computers on the market. Completion of the courses results in Certificates or Diplomas issued by the Ibiza Music Academy.

The credentials of the tutors are extremely impressive so the course cost of €150 seems ludicrously cheap! These diplomas may become very prestigious documents in the future, as the Academy’s long term plan is to create a University of Arts, which might include visual arts such as theatre, video etc. attracting allcomers from around the globe to ‘Ibiza’s’ University…
