Mitjorn beach on Formentera

One of the problems with choosing a beach in the middle of summer is that everyone else is doing the same thing…

This means that, even for a pair of islands boasting over a hundred beaches, sand to lay down your towel is often in short supply.

At times like this it is often prudent to pick a large beach, and they don’t come much larger than Mitjorn on Formentera.

A large and rather special beach like Mitjorn obviously offers a vast range of different eateries and chiringuitos along it’s 4km length, but anyone with an eye to combining a trip to the beach with a bit of culture will probably set their sights on the Pirata Bus chiringuito. I say set their sights because it took four attempts to locate this elusive rock ‘n roll museum and neither Pink Floyd nor Bob Dylan happened by on this particular visit.

One might expect to find some memorabilia, in the absence of a fully fledged monument, however, there’s nothing but a timber shack serving pretty good tapas on a bluff above the beach with fabulous views along the length of the beach.

All that remains of the legacy is the sunshine, a stunning beach and the same tunes from the era from which their legend sprang. Nonetheless, its quite an experience to sit and visualize the original bus and the rock stars that put this beach and indeed Formentera on the map…
