Pete Doherty at Ibiza Rocks Bar – Review pt2

The weekend traditionally concludes with the opening party of Space and, for those without responsibilities, the messy follow-on party called the DC 10 opening on the Monday.

This year was no exception, so many of those attending the opening party of the new Ibiza Rocks Bar in San Antonio the following Tuesday began to look jaded as the evening progressed.

The new bar is located in what used to be Bar M on the beach promenade. The M stood for Manumission, so the transition has been seamless as owners Andy and Dawn were the innovators behind both Manumission and the Ibiza Rocks mission.
The makeover is impressive and for the opening night the stage had been moved, blocking the doors that used to open straight out onto the road.

Unfortunately Pete has earned a reputation for failing to turn up to gigs, usually because he’s in police custody or already serving a sentence. He has a bit of a problem with drugs, as two dozen convictions and counting would imply. His manager once said “The only time I can be sure he’s not doing heroin or crack is when he’s in rehab or prison, or asleep.”

But the crowd waited expectantly as speculation circulated. At ten o’clock Andy confirmed that although Pete had already missed two earlier flights he was now in the air and expected to land at 10:30. Under the circumstances Andy had made a call to the local authorities and obtained an hour’s extension to the normal midnight moratorium for music outdoors. Otherwise, by the time Pete hit the stage he might only have time for a 30 minute set. This would leave Andy with a crowd of dissatisfied customers to whom Pete might have been less than polite. Last year he announced to an unreceptive audience at the Grimsby Auditorium that Grimsby was a “shit-hole” half way through his set…

As it turned out when he finally arrived and hit the stage it was a bit rough. No wonder with no sound check and fresh off a plane. As the gig went on he hit his stride and took control of the audience. First he selected a couple of pretty girls from the audience to whom he granted backstage access. They climbed onstage for a kiss and were ushered off backstage giggling. A pork pie hat followed a pair of pink knickers from the audience onto the stage to be followed by two more hats. He tried them all on to cheers or boos from the audience finally selecting the majority’s favourite.

With the audience in the palm of his hand he returned to his music seemingly unaware of them whilst pouring his heart into his music. The small stage and the side table for his bottle of wine all added to the impression that we, the audience, were voyeurs watching a composer at home in his bedroom with just a guitar and his voice for company. A moment such as this wouldn’t be much fun if it was the kid next door learning to play his instrument, but this experience was clearly music to the ears of those present and familiar with the works of Mr. Peter Doherty.

It was an impressive performance…
