Ibiza Cancer Association

Yesterday we were invited to the Royal Plaza Hotel in Ibiza Town to enjoy the company of two highly respected island residents, both of whom have been honoured by the Queen as “Members of the British Empire”.

The purpose of the meeting was to witness the installation of Helen Watson MBE, erstwhile British Consul to Ibiza through thick and thin, to the post of President of C.A.I.F. Having retired from the post of representative of the British Embassy for Ibiza earlier this year, Helen is bringing her extraordinary talents to the cause of cancer prevention and the alleviation of suffering for those afflicted with this illness. She just can’t stop helping people – and there she joins Pamela Horridge-Deaken MBE who was awarded her title for her work with the Cancer Association here.

However this meeting was not about medals or awards, it was about Jose Colomar confessing to the success of the Association and praising the efforts of his excellent team, all of whom contribute their time, energy and ingenuity for nothing and setting out their plans for the coming year.

These begin with the ongoing campaign for a radiotherapy unit in Ibiza to eradicate the need for expensive and exhausting trips to Palma for those already afflicted and ends with the Cancer Fair at the Recinto Ferial in December.

In between times and on top of all the unseen background work being done by this illustrious group of volunteers there are various imaginative fund raising efforts planned around the calendar. These include an Opera and a Gospel singing concert in Santa Eulalia, “Feria de Pascual” in San Rafael and of course the “Dia de la Bandera” celebrated in all of the island villages in June.

As more details of these events unfold of the coming months we’ll let you know more.
