Barry Flanagan – 1941 – 2009

It was my birthday yesterday and woke up to this fact but had to go to Barry Flanagans funeral here. I’m not sure what the vicar made of the congregation – Ibiza’s most eccentric bunch of people turned up and there wasn’t a single spare seat in the church of Puig d’en Missa in Santa Eulalia. It was a celebration of Barry’s life and was really moving. Flan (one of his daughters) read “Concerning The Surface of God” which essentially distilled God into a mathmatical equation – perfect subversive Barry – the vicar: “cant quite get my head round that”. There was also a playback of the track he recorded with Hugh Cornwall of The Stranglers where he narrated a poem by Sex W Johnston.

Afterwards there was a wake at Barry’s house just outside Santa Eulalia – suffice to say that even though it was a wake it was probably one of my most enjoyable birthdays I’ve ever had. There were orations, Katy & Volker played and then My Generation played which everyone danced to – the food was great and we celebrated Barry’s life. A sad but great day.
