Film Casting, Locations & Photo Shoots on Ibiza

Ibiza seems quiet in the winter as many of Ibiza’s most visible venues close until the tourists return in the summer.

Construction is in decline, so this winter the towns and villages of Ibiza are quiet, much as they must have been before the crazy construction boom took off in the first place. For some businesses this is a blessing in that it enables them to conduct their own trade with less interruption.

ibiza_photo_shootOne such business, and one of the few that brings money to the islands in the winter, are that of film productions, music videos and photo shoots. There are several highly professional production companies on Ibiza and their numbers are growing. The business here is booming and there’s little wonder. Majority of the productions in Ibiza are the photographic shoots for fashion and catalogue advertising shoots, magazines or advertising campaigns.

Companies come to Ibiza because it is close to many of the main global fashion centres – Milan, Paris and London. From anywhere in Europe it now has direct flights of less than two hours duration and, upon arrival, many fabulous settings reminiscent of the Caribbean. These factors, combined with the exceptional quality of light, make Ibiza and Formentera an obvious choice for photographers and filmmakers alike. With 300 sunny days each year, white sandy beaches, clear blue water and fabulous sunsets as a background, the rustic fincas, ancient boathouses and uber modern villas and houses offer the perfect set for photo or film production not to mention the numerous music videos shot here.

ibiza_photo_shootIbiza offers to the production world fully comprehensive services such as model bookings, pro lighting rentals, incredible locations, casting organising and helping hands of Ibiza based production assistants.

Last year the islands hosted a photoshoot for the Swiss designer Philipp Plein whose collections sell worldwide. On the last day of the ten day shoot Naomi Campbell flew over in her private jet for a few shots and she secretly admitted that it certainly wasn’t her first visit to the islands.

Also in August 2008 a documentary film was filmed by a Los Angeles production team who followed Jade Jagger’s footsteps through the clubbing scene of Ibiza taking in Amnesia, Pacha and Space.
Their attempt to portray the real spirit of the clubber’s island nearly went a step too far when their film equipment was almost confiscated for filming the public protest over the closure of DC 10. A team with stamina, they filmed non-stop for eight days…

ibiza_photo_shootThese are just a couple of examples of the type of international image the islands have, as seen through the eyes of our quiet and unacknowledged PR people behind the cameras.

In front of them the island piggy-backs the international reputations of clothing labels like Billabong, Max&Co, Versace, and Cavalli by serving as the background to their advertisements around the world.
Local companies benefit too from this business. Some indirectly in providing accommodation, food and the other necessities of life to the film crew, others directly in providing lighting, models, transport or even in arranging for the required permission to film. Written permission has to be obtained from the local authorities to film or shoot outdoors anywhere in public. This is pretty specialist work as the wheels of the administration turn very slowly and obtaining the necessary written permission can take longer than you might think.

A couple of local specialists are 365-Productions Ibiza and Deliciously Sorted Productions.
