san vicente, ibizaJose Ribas Riera stewards the parishes in San Vicente, Sant Llorenzo and San Juan. It won’t be long before the priest, who was born in San Antonio, will be celebrating 50 years in service. Don Jose has lived in San Vicente since the start of the 1960s. Wiltrud Schwetje spoke to him about his experiences over the decades, and about Christmas.

Many curves separate San Vicente from the rest of the island. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the village seems like such virgin territory in the middle of this pulsating 21st Century, where one can find the least amount of construction activity on the island. Except for a few hotel complexes built on the bay in the middle of the 1960s and a remarkable number of detached homes built on the Punta Grossa in the past few decades, it’s the pine forests, agricultural terraces and countryside feeling that dominate.

Jose Ribas Riera came to this corner of the island back in 1962 as a young priest straight after his theology studies in Santander. Aside from a few sturdy farmhouses and nature there wasn’t much else here – there were no paved roads, just caminos to San Juan and San Carlos that saw many more mules pulling carts than automobiles. The majority of foodstuffs were brought by boat from Ibiza town to the Cala, except when storms whipped up the sea, which then meant transporting them over the long and winding overland route. The magic of a magnificent starry nighttime sky wasn’t impaired by artificial sources of light.
