es vedra, ibizaThere are probably very few people by now who have never heard of the magical island of Es Vedra off the coast of Ibiza.

Back in hippy times, the little island off the Cala d’Hort coast was the stuff that legends are made of. People spoke of UFO sightings and magnetic fields that made compass dials spin as soon as they came close.

Es Vedra really does have something mysteriously majestic about it. Esoteric groups believe it gives off an energy field, but even the rest of us are inspired to dream by the sheer beauty of the location.

es vedra, ibizaWe have often written about the Cala d’ Hort bay and the islands of Es Vedra and Es Vedranell, but this time, we have a new recommendation to offer: take advantage of a cooler afternoon to go for a walk up to the platform under the Torre des Savinar watchtower, sit down and enjoy the impressive view out from Ibiza’s craggy coast, with Atlantis down below and the island’s landmark straight ahead.

This is the view that very people have ever seen – the view from Es Vedra to Ibiza:.

Over on our winter on ibiza blog we’ve put up an article about the infamous “ibiza restaurant road” on the way to San Juan:

es pinsSome five years ago we reported on the rather unusual ‘Restaurant Row’ in Ibiza, that locals know as the San Juan Road. It’s a stretch of innocuous country road from the middle of nowhere to San Juan, notable only for an extraordinary selection of diverse restaurants within the space of little more than five kilometers.

During the summer in Ibiza its reputation subsides into the shadow of the over priced and tourist dominated beach chiringuito restaurants, but it struggles through, ably supported by providing ‘insider’ food at ‘insider’ prices – these are the places to which the locals go…

And the term locals includes both the local Ibicencos and the resident ‘extranjeros’, so all tastes are catered for.
So as the bulk of the island puts up the shutters and prepares for a long winter of naval gazing, this quiet north side of the island wakes up…

es figueral, ibizaEs Figueral in Ibiza is a small development alongside a fine beach on the east coast, next door to Agua Blancas. One of the oldest establishments is the single star hotel/restaurant right on the beach.

es cubells, ibizaEs Cubells is a little village with an extraordinary story.

It was built out of religious demand as a result of the exiling of a Carmelite friar by the name of Pere (Father) Palau. If not a founder of the dissident movement, he was certainly a member and was banished to Ibiza for his sins against the ruling ideologies of his day.

He chose Es Cubells as a place offering solitude to reflect upon his predicament – there were two houses and a few sheds for storage, because the local town, San Jose, was six kilometers away over the mountains.

As an ordained priest, however, he was obliged to give Mass every Sunday to the few local peasants. Word of his preaching spread, in much the same way that the work of a good pop group publicises itself.

People flocked to his services despite the arduous journey over the mountain, then got sick of such a pilgrimage every Sunday ? it was a day off after all? They all moved in. And thus a village was born?

At long last the google maps satellite imagery of Santa Eulalia marina and Ibiza has finally been updated. Prior to now all you could see of the marina was a very blurred and out of focus image.

They have also updated most of the island as far as we can tell: The tunnel at San Rafael, the school at San Juan and the ring road around Ibiza and the new road to the airport. You can also now see the writing of “Es Vive” in the hotel pool, San Antonio’s new bus station… Golfers on the Roca Lisa golf course, the new Fenicia hotel, we’ve now got hours of fun!

The resolution has been increased and you can now zoom in fully (which means can release the “zoom-in” restirictions on all our maps).

es cana, ibizaThere are still a few island residents who can recall the time when Es Canar in Ibiza consisted of a small shed on the beach dispensing drinks (a chiringuito). Nowadays it is a busy resort throughout the summer, alongside one of the longest beaches on the island.

Es Cana bay itself is shallow and well protected, making it perfect for the predominantly English audience of young families.

The main claim to fame of the village is its huge hippy market that takes place each Wednesday throughout the summer. This is so popular that locals go to great lengths to avoid going to Es Canar on a Wednesday for fear of being caught up in the congestion that the event causes, even 5 kilometers away in Santa Eulalia.

El Pilar de La Mola on Formentera is the easternmost town of the island high on the plateau that ends in the towering cliffs below the majestic lighthouse. The whole area of La Mola is like a separate island suspended in the air and has a different atmosphere to the rest of the island.

The view over the rest of the island along the slim green leg that joins La Mola to the rest with Ibiza in the distance has to be one of the finest to be found in the whole of the Mediterranean.
