Ibiza Music

Sonica Radio, Ibiza’s favourite advert-free music radio station, continues to go from strength to strength. The days when the DJs had to climb up a ladder with their record bags slung over their shoulder to get to the first floor studio are long gone. Now in its third year, the studio alongside the San Rafael, Ibiza petrol station is a buzzing hive of activity.

ibiza musicWe’re talking to Igor Marijuan, the station’s head music honcho, when, as if to prove this point, he leaps to his feet as the background music stops, rushes into an adjacent office to grab a haversack full of CDs, then into the studio. The music kicks back in again. Then he’s accosted by a visitor and as the track fades out he begins interviewing this interruptee. It appears that the background music is, in fact, a live radio show on Ibiza!

We feel awful because we’ve caused a pause in Ibiza’s audience’s aural pleasure, but Igor returns, apologises to us instead and continues with the interview. That’s how creativity takes place around here.

Sonica Radio is an eclectic mix of laid back Ibiza, with DJs rushing up the industrial staircase clutching their latest CD and being greeted by whoever’s on the decks, whilst the tracks are playing. Meanwhile the hum of laptops and fast moving fingers hovering over keyboards adorn the offices opposite. I could sit here all day watching this lovely formula at work…

Clearly, it is this vibe that has brought the station to the attention of the ibizan government, to the extent that the Ibiza Island Council helped Sonica Radio with their latest music project. The project’s catchy handle was ‘IX UNiVERSiTAT d’ESTIU d’EiViSSA I FORMENTERA’ and it offered to teach allcomers the art of making and marketing electronic music. Their other courses included; the Secret to happiness – positive thinking and Combating obesity – nutritional counseling. With the Sonica course, subsidised by the government and with hardware supplied by Intermusic of San Sebastian, you can tap into the tricks of the trade taught by experts who live here on the island – some of them household names.
