White Island Corner Shop, Ibiza

white island corner shopThere are some moments living here in paradise when you wake up in the morning yearning for a cup of English tea, a roast with Bisto gravy, or even a Mars bar. This is, of course, completely irrational, but a ‘yearning’ is a yearning and has to be satiated.

If you live on the eastern side of the island and are a normal human being, help
is at hand with the arrival of the White Island Corner Shop in Santa Eulalia.

Yes, civilization has finally arrived in Santa Eulalia in the form of a proper corner shop that’s open all hours – just like those fabulous ‘Pakistani run’ emporiums, that proved to be the plus side of immigration policy when we were kids back in the UK.

The White Island Corner Shop is just that, on the corner opposite the car park down the road from the Eroski supermarket (that we all still refer to as the Syp). Despite the fact that they stay open throughout the traditional siesta break (2 – 5pm), their stated aim is to keep the prices of comparable goods as close to those of the nearby supermarkets as possible. They’ve obviously overlooked the fact that the only time you can find a parking spot in central Santa Eulalia nowadays is during the siesta – they’ll be mobbed…

hpim1440.jpgIn any event, they have no need to fear the local opposition. A quick glance around the shop reveals that their product range stretches from brand name ‘cook-in’ sauces and traditional UK tinned foods to UK brand name frozen meals and the popular vegetarian option, Quorn, even proper Dettol! Not to mention the cold beer that so few supermarkets here ever remember to put in the fridge.

‘Good’ I hear you say, but the shop does even better – in addition to ‘take away’ hot Pukka pies they also serve fresh filled sandwiches and baguettes, just in case you’re on your way to the beach. On the other hand, if you want to enjoy your hot pie sitting down, why not visit the White Island Café over the road and have it with a chilled beer in the other hand?

The Café serves a range of other English style snacks and meals, any of which can equally be washed down with a pot of tea or coffee, or a multitude of other re-hydration options.

We like this place since its virtually next door and is open from about 9 in the morning (whens that? ed..) until around 9 at night – but best of all thats 7 (SEVEN) days a week.
